Wedding Morning Groom Prep: 5 Simple Tips That Make a Big Difference
Let’s be honest, most of the attention on a wedding morning usually goes to the bride—but groom prep? It deserves its own moment.
It's more than just putting on a suit and showing up. It’s about setting the tone for the day, grounding your energy, and having a few solid memories captured before the big yes.
Whether you're planning a laid-back elopement or a full-blown celebration, these five tips will help keep the vibes good, the photos clean, and the experience actually enjoyable.
1. Get dressed earlier than you think you need to
Yes, I know you're probably thinking "it takes me 10 minutes to get ready" - but trust me, the extra time makes a difference.
Getting dressed with a buffer gives us the chance to capture those sharp, editorial-feeling shots of you adjusting your jacket, tying your tie, or having a quiet moment with your best mate. And if something goes missing or takes longer than expected? You're not rushing.
Bonus Tip : Practice putting on your buttonhole the night before - if it’s one thing I’ve learnt that can throw a timeline it’s this taking way longer than it should. Grab a suit jacket and practice putting one on - it’ll save time and make you feel way less stressed. Even better - place it on your jacket as soon as your flowers arrive so it’s one less thing to worry about.
2. Clear the space
This is such a small one, but huge for your photos. Bags, hangers, half-eaten toast? They all sneak into the background.
Before we start snapping, tidy the room or delegate someone to do a quick sweep. A clean space makes everything look more intentional (and less like you got dressed in a storm).
3. Stay hydrated & keep snacks nearby
This isn’t just mum advice - it’s essential. Whether you're sipping champagne or having a quiet beer with your crew, don’t forget the water. Add a few easy snacks to the mix too.
A hydrated, well-fed human = way less likely to feel faint or foggy mid-ceremony. You're welcome.
Bonus Tip : Have some electrolytes in the morning to start the day off hydrated.
4. Create a calm vibe
You don’t need to meditate (unless you want to), but playing some music, keeping your phone on do- not-disturb, and having a calm crew around makes a huge difference.
This part of the day often holds a lot of anticipation. Creating space to breathe, laugh, and just be present makes for some seriously good memories.
Bonus Tip : Assign someone in your groomsmen to be the go-to person for questions or calls. This takes the stress off of you and allows you to be present.
5. Keep your essentials in one place
Cufflinks, watch, vows, rings. The things that tend to disappear right when you need them.
Group them together the night before so you’re not tearing through bags on the morning of. It also helps me capture those flat lay shots or detail close-ups without the frantic energy.
A little planning = a better experience
Your wedding morning doesn’t need to be over-orchestrated, but a bit of thought goes a long way. You’ll feel more relaxed, more present, and your photos will reflect that.
Because your prep matters too - and it deserves to look and feel as good as the rest of the day. Got questions about groom prep or need timeline advice? Let's chat.
